How to find hope: Look in the right place
The single life can be a struggle. Those of us who are honest admit that. Then there are the singles who put on a good front, keeping busy with a flurry of activity, never thinking about the tough questions.
But there's more to life than hanging out, and the clock is ticking on all of us. True fulfillment comes from meaning, not shallowness. While recreation is important, it's no substitute for significance.
This month we look at finding hope. Hope is the compass that keeps singles heading in the right direction. We'll explore several places where people commonly search for hope. I put my hopes in a couple of those areas years ago, so I can tell you from experience what happened.
When we're young, we often think old people are irrelevant. Out of it. They couldn't possibly understand how the world is today. They talk about how it was 50 years ago. I learned the hard way that they're worth listening to. While the world does change, human nature
doesn't.
Avoid the mistakes I made. Learn from the lessons I finally figured out. Save yourself time, trouble, and heartache. And hey! It's all f'ree! Here's what I found out about where to find hope…
Clear as a bell
The old man glared at me
as he put down his beer.
"If you're looking for answers,
you won't find them here.
"I searched my whole life,
from nightclub to bar,
spent thousands of dollars,
but didn't get far.
"But there's one thing," he said,
"That I do know well.
When you discover the truth,
It's as clear as a bell."
I continued my seeking
and the years rolled on.
My dreams were all shattered,
my passion was gone.
Then I wandered one day
in a quaint little town
and was drawn to the outskirts
by a musical sound.
It was only a church,
but as people filed in
the ringing reminded
me of my sin.
As I walked through the door
I could finally tell,
what I searched for was here.
It was clear as a bell.

Rick Warren is quotable in June
June's Quote of the Month comes from Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California and author of The Purpose Driven Life:
You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense.
~ Rick Warren (1954- ) ~
Much of our lives is spent desperately trying to impress other people, and most of the time, we feel we have failed at that. It's a liberating discovery when you finally learn that's not the purpose of life at all.
There is a God. He created you for himself, so He can love you and you can love Him in return. That's the meaning of life. God gave his Son Jesus as Savior so you can have a right relationship with God.
Life begins to make sense when you put God at the top of it. If you don't, you'll spend the rest of your days asking, "Why?" Open your heart to God's love for you. Then love Him back.
The irresistible quality of God
After a while, all the things we hope in grow old and dull. They lose their appeal. God is different, and here's the mystery: Even though he never changes, he's always new. How can that be? Part of it is his complexity. There's always something new to discover about him, every single day.
One way to tune in to God's love for you is my ebook, Hope for Hurting Singles.

Is it time for you to have a cleanse?
Relax! I'm not talking about those herbal tea potions that make you a prisoner of the bathroom all weekend. The kind of cleanse I'm suggesting is the spiritual type, but it also gets the impurities out of your system.
You know what I mean. You've accumulated hurt and anger, frustration and disappointment. They're festering inside you like an ugly witch's brew. Cleanse your soul and you cleanse your life.
Here's how to do it in a short article on avoiding bitterness.
Oy, this single life! It has its good points and its bad points, but we make more opportunities when we stay positive. Others are drawn to positive people. Don't go overboard and become a goofus, but do believe in laughter, compliments, kindness, and optimism.

Summer's sneaking by here in central Illinois, USA where I live. My town has lots of beautiful trees and I always enjoy my neighbors' flowers when Louie the dog and I go for a walk.
Get outdoors! Gulp down some fresh air. Enjoy God's beauty.
